The advantage of renting in town, is that if your gear needs a tweaking while you're using it, or you want to trade it in for a different model, you have the convenient access to the shop while you're on vacation. Many of the shops have demo rental programs where you can try several pairs of skis or board on a day, so that you can find the ideal equipment to own. Many sell what the rent.
