Mammoth Resort Opening Day

Mammoth will once again try to be the first California and west coast ski resort to open. Scheduled opening day is Thursday November 10, 2011 with celebrations and parties all weekend long. Mammoth has had a long history of opening before the other ski areas due to the higher elevations of the Eastern Sierra and the increase in water moisture in the air. Mammoth's Main Lodge is 8,600 ft which is higher than the tallest peak in Lake Tahoe - Heavenly Valley at 8560 ft. You read that correctly, the highest point is Lake Tahoe is the base of the Main Lodge at Mammoth. The Main Lodge goes up from there about 2500 ft to an total elevation of 11,053 ft.
For all you hard core season pass holders and visitors to our humble ski mountain, this year the prediction is for average snowfall which is around 400 inches, and extremely cold temperatures which keeps our powder fresh. On the snow years where we say it is a big snow year, snowfall is over 600 inches.
